Malus domestica Red Spur Delicious is a compact tree that grows only to a height of 2m. This variety will produce an impressive harvest of full-sized, sweetly flavoured fruits, similar in characteristics to those of the 'Red Delicious' family. Bred in the chilly climate of East Holland, the Red Spur is fully cold-hardy and has a columnar, upright habit making it the perfect feature plant for gardens or patios with limited space. This specimen is also self-fertile meaning that it can produce fruits by itself.

Young trees must be watered thoroughly and sprinkled with fertilizer each spring. You can mulch the soil in April with rotted manure or compost around the base of the trunk. They should be planted in well-sheltered locations. Apple trees are suitable for planting in most types of moderately fertile, well drained soil, although they do not like acid soil. If possible prepare the ground some time in advance of planting. Open out holes and plant with enough space to accommodate the roots without cramping them. Plant in a sunny location if possible. Begin weed control prior to planting and keep a clean ring around the plant (with a radius of approx 24 inches).
