Welsh Onion, also known as Allium fistulosum, produces globe-shaped heads with yellow/white flowers. Can grow quite tall, up to 2 metres. Ideal for growing at the back of a border. It has a slight fragrance but this isn't as offensive as some garlic plants.

Can be sown indoors or outdoors all year round. If growing indoors, over winter seedlings in the greenhouse and plant out in spring. Outdoor growing is fine, as the cold weather helps to stratify the seeds. Surface sow onto moist compost and lightly cover with soil. Pop in the fridge for 4-6 weeks for indoor growing and then return indoors to warm conditions for them to germinate. Repeat this cycle if germination fails. Transplant seedlings once theyÛªre big enough to handle and grow on in 8cm pots before planting outdoors (once hardened off for 1-2 weeks). Keep somewhere sunny and open. Ensure outdoor soil does not get waterlogged.
